Laser Hair Removal FAQs

Q: How do I know I am a candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

A: The ideal candidate for Laser Hair Removal is someone with fair skin and dark hair. The laser will pick up any hair that has color to it. White hair CANNOT be picked up by the laser. If the hair is a mixture of white and dark, the dark hairs will only be picked up.

We can treat all skin types.

Q: How does Laser Hair Removal work?

A: The laser creates a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deep into skin tissue where it delivers a controlled amount of targeted therapeutic heat. Candela's patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) technology protects the upper layers of your skin with a cooling burst of cryogen. Together, the long-pulse laser and the DCD cooling offer optimal treatment with minimal side effects.

Q: How many treatments does it take to clear an area?

A: Generally 5-7 treatments are necessary to totally remove hair from any body area. Facial hair for women and back hair for men may require more treatments.

Q: What happens after I use my package of 5 treatments and still need additional treatments?

A: After you use your package of 5 treatments, it is up to you if you would like to get any additional treatments done. You will then be placed into "Maintenance mode" and get any additional treatments at a discounted price.

Q:Why do I need multiple treatments?

A: For Laser Hair Removal, multiple treatments are required, as the process is most effective when the hair follicle is in its active growth phase.

Q:Is Laser Hair Removal permanent?

A: Laser Hair Removal has been in use for some time, and stable hair loss has been reported as far back as ten years, and Candela has clearance through the FDA to claim permanence. It still needs to be spoken in terms of permanent "reduction" rather than "removal" since removal denotes 100% and that is not realistic for all parts of the body.

Q: Why must patients not wax or pluck the area to be treated  prior to Laser Hair Removal treatments?

A: Any area that is being treated MUST be shaved prior to your treatment. You should NOT pluck, wax, or tweeze the hair because you are pulling out the root and that is what needs to be present for the hair to be removed by laser. NOTE: Shaving the area WILL NOT cause your hair to grow back thicker and darker!

Q: Why must  protective eyewear be worn by everyone in the treatment room?

A: Laser light can be harmful to the eyes so it is mandatory for everyone in the procedure room to wear protective eyewear.

Q: Can any area of the body be treated?

Laser Hair Removal can be done on any body part excluding the eyelashes.

Q: Does it hurt?

A: Some patients may feel a slight discomfort with each laser pulse, sometimes described as the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort resolves in several seconds and is minimized by Candela's DCD Cooling System.

Q:What are possible side effects of laser hair removal?

A: Your risks are minimal. Side effects may include redness, swelling, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blistering, and purpura (a laser bruise) in the treated area- these usually do not last more than a few days. Permanent side effects are rare.

Q: How long do I have to wait between treatments?

A: Each treatment should be spaced 10-12 weeks apart to make sure your hair is in the right phase to treat.

Q: Are there any reasons to why I might not get treated at the time of my appointment?

A: There are a few different reasons to why we might say we cannot treat you the day of your scheduled appointment time (you will be rescheduled for a different day). These reasons include:

  1. If you have had recent sun exposure or have applied self-tanner before your treatment. Please be honest with us if you have been in the sun or tanning bed, this can cause side effects for you and safety is always first at Cosmetic Laser Center.
  2. If you are currently on antibiotics please let us know. There are a few different reasons why we would not treat you if you are on antibiotics for an active infection please let us know what medications you are on.
  3. If you do not have enough re-growth.  We want to make sure you are getting the most for your money!
